Detailed 7 days Rwanda’s great apes and wildlife safari itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be met by your guide who will transfer you to your accommodation for the night. Depending on your arrival time, you may have the opportunity to explore the city of Kigali, which is known for its vibrant markets and interesting museums.

Day 2: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast, you will set off for Volcanoes National Park, which is located in the northern part of Rwanda. The journey takes approximately 2.5 hours, and you will arrive in time for lunch. In the afternoon, you can visit the nearby twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo, which offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

Day 3: Gorilla Trekking


Today is the highlight of your trip is  gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park. After an early breakfast, you will make your way to the park headquarters for a briefing on the gorilla trekking rules and regulations. You will then set off into the forest with your guide and trackers, in search of one of the habituated gorilla families. Once you locate the gorillas, you will spend an unforgettable hour observing them in their natural habitat.

Day 4: Golden Monkey Trekking


After breakfast, you will head back into Volcanoes National Park for golden monkey trekking. These playful primates are endemic to the Albertine Rift and are a joy to watch as they jump from tree to tree. The trek usually takes around 3 hours, and you will have the rest of the afternoon to relax or explore the local community.

 

Day 5: Transfer to Akagera National Park


After breakfast, you will leave the volcanoes and head east to Akagera National Park. The journey takes approximately 5 hours, and you will arrive in time for lunch. In the afternoon, you can enjoy a boat safari on Lake Ihema, which offers excellent bird watching opportunities as well as the chance to spot hippos and crocodiles.

Day 6: Game Drive in Akagera National Park

Today you will spend the day exploring Akagera National Park on a game drive. The park is home to a variety of wildlife, including elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, and numerous antelope species. You will have a picnic lunch in the park and return to your lodge in the late afternoon.

Day 7: Departure

After breakfast, you will depart from Akagera National Park and head back to Kigali. Depending on your flight schedule, you may have time to do some last-minute shopping or visit some of the city’s other attractions before transferring to the airport for your onward journey.
